Hi my name is Elizabeth Szambel and I have been running since I was 9 years old. I started running with my father who is a marathon runner as well as an ultra marathon runner. I attend a small catholic high school in Rutherford, NJ. As an incoming freshman, I was excited to be a part of a team only to find out that I was the only person on the team. There was no coach either! Over the next two years, I grew as a runner and my school hired a real running coach. I also encouraged other students to join our team, eventually adding an additional 7 runners, none of them were female! I soon realized that my love for running was less social and more self motivating. Having no one to run with I learned to push myself harder, past my comfort level.
Running at the collegiate level will only enhance my performance and will allow me to be a part of a team that shares the same goal of excelling as an athlete as well as a student.
