When my parents adopted me at eighteen months old, they were not worried about athletic pursuits. They wanted me to learn how to walk and to strengthen weak muscles from being confined to a crib for eighteen months. Physical therapy ensued in the attempt to strengthen my core and to help me move to lose weight. I really enjoyed American food, so I became obese. My parents worked diligently to find ways to help me move. I started in ballet, but I was bored. However, upon watching Irish dance, I wanted to do this. Irish dance was perfect for me as I am missing my left elbow, ulna bone and some fingers due to a birth defect; this sport requires arms at the side with no movement. I started Irish dancing at four and I fell in love with competition. I am an open champion and have danced at the All Irelands. I love competition. At age fourteen, I was ready for a new challenge, track. I love running and I love being part of a team as Irish dance is very individualized. I love the ease of knowing whether or not I did well based on the timers at the end of the run. Its quick feedback. I am excited to start with a trainer this summer as I love to workout and I want to improve my times. Competition is what I love. I love challenging my body and mind. I love to win.
