Hello Coaches,
My name is Kaylee Hopkins, and I live in Spring, Texas. I run on a small homeschool team that has one practice every week, and the rest is up to me. It is here where I think my dedication to the sport really stands out.
I run 7 to 15 miles a day, six days a week. If that means showing up to my practice early to run extra miles, waking up early to ensure that I can get a run in that day, or even running two-a-days, so be it. I have weekly distance goals that I work hard to accomplish.
Because my team only has one real day of practice every week, I often have to come up with my own workouts and run them by myself. I feel like this has't necessarily been the best thing for me over the years, since I only recently started figuring out what really gets me faster in training, but now I am absolutely determined to make sure that every run and strength workout counts.
When I do have a practice with my team, I run with the varsity boys. There are only 6 other girls on my team, and while they are all some of my best friends, they are younger than I am and not fast enough to push me to run faster. This has led the team to give me the affectionate nickname "Kyle."
During the off season, I don’t have a team to train with, so I have to go months figuring out my workouts and trying to decide how to get faster for the next season. It is with this past off season especially that I feel like I have really made a significant improvement. From the end of last track season in May to a time trial I ran by myself in July, I knocked 15 seconds off of my 1600m PR, from a 5:38 to a 5:23.
Because I can’t record any official 1600m times until next track season, I post PR’s that I run from time trials on this site to show the increase in my times. The last time trial I ran was the one on July 16th, where I ran the 5:23 PR.
From last cross country season to this one, I have already knocked a minute off of my PR in the 2 mi, from a 12:34 to an 11:37 on the same course. I hope to make this big of a jump on my 5k time by the end of this season.
Finally, as for being coached in college, I want you to know that I will do whatever you ask of me. If you want me to double my weekly mileage, I will do it. If you want me to try a strength or non-running workout, I will absolutely do it. I will literally go the extra mile to get myself faster and become more of an asset to the team.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement. I look forward to the possibility of being able to run in college.
- Kaylee Hopkins
