I am Kayla Chu, class of 2022, 5’8” left handed setter. I attend Polytechnic School and have played Varsity volleyball since my freshman year. I am also a part of the 2019-20 Varsity swim team. I have played club volleyball for the past 5 years and am part of the San Gabriel Elite Volleyball Club. I passed my AP Chemistry exam and am currently taking AP English, AP Calculus, and AP Biology. I pioneered a new club called the Medical Exploration Club (instagram: poly_medical_club, website: https://sites.google.com/students.polytechnic.org/medicalexplorationclub/home) to allow students to have an opportunity to learn basic medical procedures, discuss how past diseases and vaccines have influenced the present, and allow students to have intimate discussions with invited speakers specialized in all areas of the medical field. I hope to become a physician specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
I am currently playing an age group higher, again, on San Gabriel Elite's 18-Elite volleyball team for 2020-2021 club season. We will be competing in the highly competitive SCVA PVL Tournaments throughout the season. During the 2019-2020 club season, I was offered and opted to play two age groups higher and was a part of the San Gabriel Elite’s 18-Elite team, which finished the shortened season in 18U Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA) Division 1. In the 2018-19 season, my SCVA 15U team finished in Division 1, earned a silver medal in the Far Western Qualifier, and earned a USA division bid to the Girls Junior National Championships. During my 2017-18 season we earned a bronze medal in the Junior Volleyball Association West Coast Cup and a bronze medal at the Girls Junior National Championships in the Patriot Division.
At Polytechnic School, during the 2019-20 season, as a sophomore, I helped lead our team to an undefeated record as two time, back to back, Prep League champions. We ended the season as CIF Southern Section Division III Semi-Finalist and made it to the Southern California Regional State playoffs. In my 2018-19 season, we were Prep League champions, 2018 CIF Southern Section Division IV Runner up, and competed in the Southern California Regional State playoffs.
I love volleyball because it is fun! I hunger for better competition and a continuous fight to win. I learned it is important to maintain a strong stamina and endurance to persevere through any challenge. Throughout the years, I mostly enjoyed the close friendships I have made within the volleyball community. That is why I love volleyball.
I believe that I have great sportsmanship, which makes a great teammate, since I am humble yet driven. I enjoy bringing positive energy and am supportive to my teammates on and off the court. This builds trust, good team chemistry, and strong friendships.
I enjoy eating sushi, listening to K-pop music, watching K-dramas, and playing mahjong with my family. I have a sister in the 7th grade named Ellie Chu who I am closest with and a Shih-Tzu named Boomer.
