Above all else, my overall values in life are my faith in God, my love for my family, my dedication to my education, and my passion for athletics. These values that I was taught at a young age growing up in the Hawaiian culture serve as my guide to my life on and off the court.
I believe that an effective leader is required to possess many important traits as a student and athlete. She should be confident, supportive, selfless, motivated, persistent, and willing to accept success and failure with dignity and respect. An effective leader should also be able to communicate, lead by example, and sometimes lead by following. I believe the setter position allows athletes to exercise these leadership qualities, which is why I thoroughly enjoy serving in that role.
I believe I am a coachable athlete and someone who puts in 110% on and off the court. I aim to please my coaches and teammates and I’m willing to take risks to improve my skill level. I am eager to learn and experience new things, and I enjoy helping others be successful. I had/have the opportunity to be a starter and play all six rotations including left side power hitter and right side blocker within a 6-2 offense, as well as a 5-1 setter on my high school and club teams. Due to these opportunities, I am able to understand how important a setter’s consistency is from an attacker’s perspective. In my 2016/17 high school and club seasons I had/have the honor to serve as the floor captain for my teams to help my coaches run their offense, help maintain morale, and communicate with the referees when needed. I am proud and honored to serve in that leadership role to help my teams achieve a high level of success.
One of the daily challenges I face as a volleyball athlete is my height. As a 5’7” athlete I have to overcome adversity and being told that I am too short to be a setter. Despite this, I have received positive feedback from my high school and club coaches saying that I am a serious athlete with high aspirations and I have a good work ethic. I am told I possess a high athletic IQ, I’m fast on my feet, I attempt to be tactical in my play, and I work hard to constantly improve my game. My coaches have suggested that some of my strongest attributes are my strength and toughness, not just physical, but mental as well which encourages my teammates to work hard and follow suit.
My short term goals are to continue to excel in school, become more consistent with my sets, and increase my vertical to be a bigger threat on the net. My long term goal is to find a good fit at a college that has a competitive volleyball program and offers a wide range of academic options where I can pursue my academic goals and be an asset to a competitive team.
