Hi! I’m Sammie Mitchell, I have been playing volleyball since 8th grade in my backyard when I realized that I like the sport. The summer going into freshman year I decided it was time to quit soccer and move into volleyball full time, I went to multiple camps throughout the summer and I even got private lessons with my future club volleyball coach. I picked up the sport quickly and made the JV team at my high school as a middle hitter. As I went into my first club season they wanted me to play outside. At first I was upset but then I realized playing that position made me love the sport even more. My sophomore season I made my high schools Varsity team as a starter on the right side. I had a great season however I still wanted to play on the outside. Unfortunately the game before trying a new lineup I broke my ankle. Not even half way through my first Varsity season something had already went wrong. After about a week of rest I had started to show up to the gym for my team everyday. I would cheer them on no matter what and always made sure I had a ball to play with sitting in the chair in the corner of the gym. It wasn’t easy watching your second family do something you love so much. At so many games I found myself breaking down missing the court so much, longing to be back out there with my team. After our season had ended I began physical therapy, 2 times every week for 4 months I worked to get my strength and mobility back. Thankfully the club I had played for the previous year allowed me to play even through I wasn’t cleared until after tryouts. This club season I focused on regaining my strength enjoying playing the sport that I love and training to be better then so was. As a 5’9” outside hitter you are told that you won’t make it to playing in college. I challenge that. I challenge colleges to look at the smaller athletes and how much they have to offer. We work. I work. I have a passion to play volleyball in my college career, and I want to fulfill that.
