Hi, My name is Alexys Signor. I have been playing softball since I was in 5th grade when I gave up cheerleading to pursue and more active sport that challenged not only me physically but mentally. I immediately fell in love with softball and surprising most, the catching position. I had some great coaches during my early years of rec softball in my hometown and was taught many lessons on how to play, win and lose like a stellar athlete.
I feel like I would be an excellent candidate for any team because as much as I am competitive- I am also a team player. I believe in the saying 'There is no I in team', as cliche as it might seem. I believe that every win or loss- it is achieved by the teams effort or lack there of.
What sets me apart from other recruits is my determination, my ability to take criticism of all forms and grow and learn from it. I take my athletics as seriously as I take my academics. I have been an honor student every semester since I entered the North Haven Middle School in 6th grade. I have been given a strong work ethic by my parents and I am grateful for the opportunities they have been able to give me to become the athlete that I am today. I played on the middle school softball team in 7th and 8th grade after making it to the final four my 6th grade year but the coach only took 2- 6th graders that year. Not making the team was an experience I am grateful for having gone through. I feel like it taught me some humility and how to be humble. I was able to cheer on my friends who did make it without ever feeling an ounce of animosity towards them. It just wasn't my time to shine.
7th and 8th grade were so far, some of the best years I have had playing for the school teams. I not only got to experience different positions but I also learned the strength of my arm when in 8th grade, I was able to throw out a girl at home from left field with a direct throw with no cut off. I was so excited in that moment. I knew that I had saved a run and possible the game.
Entering my freshmen year, I was a little intimidated but quickly met and befriended a good portion of the softball team who also played Volleyball in the fall. I felt that it was imperative for me to have a healthy athlete-to-athlete relationship because trust plays an important role on the field.
Aside from softball, I also learned the sport of Volleyball the summer before my freshman year. Our town does not have a team on the Intermediate School level and only offered a 1 week camp over the summer. It was the best experience. That fall, I tried out and made the JV Volleyball team at the North Haven High School and felt like I grew in leaps and bounds not only as an athlete but also as a person. The season went by so quickly but I looked forward to each game and practice, knowing it was helping me become a better version of me.
My sophomore year, I had to try out again. Each year, regardless of grade, you are required to re-try out for the team. I was excited to be chosen again to play JV and was also double rostered for Varsity in the event they needed girls to play up. It was a welcomed challenge to practice with them and I looked forward to the ability to show the varsity coach what I could do. My next moment of surprise and excitement came when I was named the Libero for the JV team. It is a more demanding position that requires me to be vocal and in control whenever I am on the court.
My collegiate goals are to go into education. I do not know exactly what grade level I am interested in, I just know I want to teach. I love working with children and having younger siblings- I already know that I have the patience required. I also would love to be a coach. I have spent a lot of time working with younger children on my sister's TBall team as well as running the winter clinics for the North Haven Girls Softball Rec League. I enjoy teaching them the basics and mechanical movements and watching their faces light up when a catch is made or a ball is thrown straight and on target.
I hope that I can be someone that stands out to a school as not only a good athlete but a good student and all around good person.
Thank you!
Lexy Signor
