- My name is Izabella Cruz I am a junior at Somerset Academy Charter Highschool. I have been playing volleyball since 6th grade, because the school I attend is both a middle and high school I was able to play on the junior varsity team in 7th grade and made the varsity team 8th grade. This opportunity allowed me to play multiple positions, 6th grade I played setter ,7th - Freshman year grade I played middle back, and sophomore year I became starting libero. This year as a junior I'm working on back row attacks. The biggest obstacle I have overcome was an injury I faced sophomore year. A sprained ACL costed me my season and I had finally gotten the position I have worked for since 8th grade. Sitting at the games not being able to play with my team was the most heartbreaking thing I experienced. But I continued to fight and gain my strength back while cheering my team on from the side. This sport has made me realize how strong, hardworking, and competitive I really am. Being on these teams has taught me to work well with others, I’ve learned to overcome obstacles in order to achieve the goals I set forth, and work to get to the level required to enjoy playing the sport that I love.
I began middle school taking honors classes in hopes of making it to high school ready to complete college level classes in order to graduate with in associates degree. As I begin planning for college, I am looking for both a university that will fulfill my dreams of becoming a doctor or surgeon and my love for playing volleyball.
