My name is Verity Tebay. I attend Port Huron Northern High School and I will graduate in 2023. I attended New Life Christian Academy from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I have always been very interested in all types of sports. I started doing gynmastics when I was 4 and starting competing by age 6. I decided that I would pursue other interests, so I started playing basketball in 6th grade. Then during my 6th grade orientation, my Spanish teacher, who was also the volleyball coach, begged me to try out for Volleyball. I really never had an interest in volleyball, but I thought I would give it a shot. It turned out that I loved volleyball more than any other sport I had played and I was good at it. Being at a Christian school the sport teams were not very competitive , so I begged my parent to go to Port Huron Norther High (PHNH), a Class A public school. I believed that I could gain skill and competitive experience.
At PHNH I made the Freshmen and Junior varsity volleyball team. I played the Libero position both years. I also was selected to play on the Blue Water Volleyball team, which is a local club in the Bluewater area. But unfortunately, the Covid pandemic shortened the season. In January 2021, I will begin to play with the Michigan Elite VB team, Michigan elite is one of the biggest volleyball club organizations in Michigan. I anticipate I will be playing in a defensive position.
Over the years, I have also attended several camps: the St. Clair Community College camp 5 times and the Michigan State camp in 2019. I had planned to attend this summer, but Covid cancelled that opportunity. I also have attended lots of small school camps, with Port Huron Northern high school and Marysville high school, and a Michigan Elite training camp with a select group from my school.
I am currently in my Sophmore year. I am taking AP US Government, AP Seminar, and Honors Geometry. My GPA for this first semember is 3.45. My class rank as a freshman was 114 of 284 (40%). My goal is to be minimally in the top 10% of the class of 2023. My academic goals will most likely change, but at this point in time, I am interested in pursuing criminal justice, forensic science, and psychology . I find it fascinating to study the psychology of criminal behavior.
Many college coaches may wonder why I have just started the college recruiting process. Frankly, I didn’t have the confidence that I could be good enough to play college ball. But this year, I have learned so much from my coach, Kenny, and gained confidence. He told me, some people do VB to condition for another sport, but “Verity plays VB because she IS a true. i Volleyball player...". I have improved in all of my skills and I am the only one on the team that my coach trusts to do a jump serve. I also have practiced mainly on my passing, which working on fixing my platform, getting my feet to the ball and my form over all. I also have developed my leadership skills, as the libero so that the back row works better together.
