My main goal for college is to get a great education that will lead me to a successful career in a meaningful field, but I have always loved the competition and camaraderie that sports have brought to my life, so if I could do that while also playing volleyball at a competitive level It would round out my college career.
I have played both volleyball and basketball up through my sophomore year of high school, with more of my time spent on basketball because the club volleyball season over-lapped with basketball so I couldn't play both at a high level, but the AAU basketball season fit nicely between the high school seasons for the two sports. I finally decided that volleyball was what I liked best and I want to continue to play it in college at as high a level as I can.
My high school, Nova Classical Academy, is a classical, college preparatory school, ranked among the best schools in the country for its academics. It has prepared me for the challenges of working hard as a student-athlete, regularly doing 3 hours of homework a night through my sports' seasons. It also focuses a lot of our discussion on the virtues that make education and hard work mean something more than just getting ahead in the world. I have spent 60+ hours each summer on volunteering in educational programs for kids.
Because I have spent more time with basketball up through my sophomore year I feel like I do not have quite as advanced training as other high-level volleyball players to this point. However, I feel like I gained a sense for fast moving competition, and fast thinking in a competitive setting, through my basketball training - which seems to help me have a natural knack for timing in volleyball. I intend to attend several volleyball camps this summer in preparation for competing at a high level during the coming club season.
