Height does and does not matter. When I was two years old I was 2'11''. The doctors predict your full-grown height to be double that of age two. It would seem I was on my way. At age four, I recall competing in gymnastics against girls my same age, but half my height. It felt awkward. My height was praised when, at age ten, I started playing volleyball as a middle blocker. Most of the girls were half my height. As the seasons passed, I watched these same girls outgrow me. Boy, were the doctors wrong! No matter. I fought and continued to play middle-blocker because I was strong and determined. However, after middle school, I stood short at 5'5'' for a middle blocker. My insecurities about my length heightened (pardon the pun) and I explored other positions on the volleyball court. In my freshman year, I switched to outside hitter. Early in the season, one teammate got injured. For the benefit of the team, I transitioned back to middle blocker. In my sophomore year, I tried out again as an outside hitter and made varsity. During the first game, the starting setter sustained an injury. Coach moved me to setter on the spot and I was the primary setter for the remainder of the season. In my junior year, I started as an outside hitter playing all the way around. Our team won the Conference Tournament. Because of my height, I didn't think that I could pursue college volleyball. I am open to and have played almost every position. My only regret is waiting this late to pursue my passion for the game. I would love to play college volleyball. I hope that I receive the opportunity to show you that I can contribute anywhere on the court and can benefit the team at the collegiate level.
