My fascination with volleyball began at a very young age, following my dad to his tournaments. I now understand why he chose to continue playing through college, and why he still plays and coaches now. To my dad, volleyball is freeing. It gives him the chance to escape from stress and play the game he loves with a team that cares for him, and it has become the same thing for me.
This past summer I faced one of the biggest challenges in my volleyball career so far when my family and I moved from Minnesota to North Carolina. Everything was new and took time to adjust to: my team, my coaches, my school, my house, and even the climate. However, looking back, I think that the pressure and uncertainty really helped me to grow as a player and person. I had to make a spot for myself on our very talented team, and this pushed me to work harder and find more confidence in myself.
Outside of volleyball, I am very focused on school and have always excelled in gifted and talented programs. My passion for learning also extends into my hobbies. I play 4 instruments and counting (guitar, viola, banjo, and ukulele), and am studying multiple languages. I am proud to have tested ahead in Spanish, and be well on my way to fluency, after putting in hours of individual study outside of class. More recently, I have started to study Arabic, and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge this brings. I plan to someday be fluent in at least 5 languages outside of English.
In my spare time, you may find me juggling, learning the unicycle, working on a creative project, reading, or outside with friends, family, and my 3 dogs. Juggling is one of the most entertaining skills I have picked up. I like to carry my juggling balls and balloon animals with me in my volleyball bag, and I love watching the happiness something so simple brings to people. Community service also fills a lot of my time. Before moving, I volunteered regularly with my mom, and I am already finding ways to give back down here.
Strong academics will be my first priority when considering colleges. At this time I think I might be interested in majoring in psychology, sociology, linguistics, law, or a related field where I could apply my interest in people and the way the mind works. I hope to find a school that allows me to play at a competitive level while also fulfilling my academic goals.
