Hello,
My name is Josie Niemeyer and I will be graduating from Taylor High School in 2022. I was a two sport athlete until seventh grade, when I stopped playing soccer to focus on volleyball. My first tryout for a club team, I was disappointed to only make the training team. This experience made me realize that if I wanted to pursue becoming a better volleyball player at that level, I needed to work hard at all of the opportunities given to me. I learned a lot from that training, and the next year, I made a club team and I have been improving every year since. This past fall, my high school team made it to the District finals, the farthest the volleyball program has ever made it in post-season play. Two days before the game was scheduled, I found out that I would not be able to play due to being identified as a “close contact” to a person who tested positive with COVID. This was the most devastating news and having to tell my coach was one of the most difficult things I have had to do. I grew that day not only as a person, but as a student-athlete as well. I realized how quickly important things in your life can be taken away. I also made the decision that I wanted to continue my volleyball career at the next level, in college. I couldn’t see my passion for the sport end next year.
I am seen as a leader both on and off the court. As a 6 position player on both my high school and club teams, I have learned the value of being a team player, being supportive to my teammates and building a cohesive team environment. Hard work, commitment and leadership are characteristics I believe are valuable in a player, and I believe I possess these characteristics. Working as a team is important when trying to win matches, but also being there for one another is important when teammates get discouraged. Off the court, I work part time and enjoying babysitting as well.
I work hard not only on the court, but in the classroom as well. Maintaining good grades is important to me. As I look ahead to college, I would like to pursue a career in the medical field, possibly considering pre-med as a major. Having good time management, being organized and goal directed will help me excel as a student-athlete. I am looking for a program that will be a good fit for me both academically and athletically. I not only feel that I have the talent to compete at the college level, but the character and perseverance it takes to make a positive impact on the team from day one.
Thanks for your interest and l look forward to hearing from you soon,
Josie Niemeyer
