Hello, my name's Vania Okolo and I'm a 13-year-old outside hitter. I'm from Dallas, Texas but raised in Nigeria, Lagos. I play for Chatham Christian School, 10th grade, and have been playing volleyball since 8th grade. I'm 13 in 10th grade because I skipped grade 6 and I started school early. Although, I started the sport a bit late and I'm younger than my peers, my hard work and maturity elevates me to their level. My passion for volleyball actually didn't start until grade 9, I had began playing in grade 8 but I never got much playing time, as our team was grade 7-12.
My 2023-2024 season really taught me that sports aren't just about skill, it's about working together, team chemistry, and mental health. I strive to be a role model to my teammates and I'm thankful my coach assigned me as captain. Aside athletics, I maintain a good GPA, as I take my academics really seriously because my future goal is to become a Neurosurgeon.
When I play, I don't pay attention to anything else, my focus is on how we play. Regardless of if my team is losing, I always uphold a positive and uplifting spirit, encouraging those on the court, whether I'm playing or on the bench. I strive to improve individually and as part of the team. I enjoy helping others succeed and grow their love for the game.
I'm excited to see what's next for me in this sport and hopefully your team.
