All Canadian 2023
All Canadian 2024.
My name is Megan Chiang, a 5ft 8 Leftside/Libero looking to play volleyball at the collegiate level. Sports has been an integral part of my childhood. Skating, ice hockey, soccer, basketball, high jump, taekwondo and swimming dominated most of our daily schedule. My parents used sports as the platform to make us physically and mentally stronger and to communicate with us.
Volleyball was introduced to me because of my eldest brother, Derek, who was forced to join his elementary school VB team. He excelled in it and is now currently on a VB scholarship at his university and has represented Team Ontario on several occasions. My second brother, Darren has followed the same pathway to Team Ontario. However, when I started playing VB, I knew this was the sport for me. I have been very fortunate to have parents support me and siblings to guide me on this pathway.
Volleyball is a game for giants. However, I feel height doesn't measure heart and determination. 5 ft 8 inches is not tall enough to be an outside hitter at the U17-18 age. However, strength training, speed, utilizing many angles of attack, communicating with my setter and studying opponent tendencies has allowed me to find success on the club and provincial stage. Reach Harmony won the 2023 Nationals. I was awarded the MVP trophy and it proved to me that passion, preparation, grit, communication and intuition are needed to be successful in volleyball and life. Later that summer, I was the Libero/LS in the gold medal team for Canada Cup. I am short, but I do intend to stand tall in my own unique way in the world of VB.
I am looking forward to my collegiate years. I am looking to learn more about life, find myself and know my strengths and weaknesses. I intend to continue to play VB at this level and start my academic journey towards a dental degree. The dental degree will allow me to join my father in his practice and accompany him to his volunteer trips to India and SE Asia. Making a difference to society is a must and I was taught to give back to society for the privileged life we have here in Canada.
My versatility in VB makes me a good asset to any VB team. I intend to be the best player I can be, as a hitter or Libero. I will achieve this with the unlimited passion I have for VB. I am going to push myself to make the team and in the process encourage the current players to get better to retain their position on the team. Personal achievements are sweeter when you make other better and the most rewarding when we win as a team. Volleyball is the ultimate team sport and I intend to make the team better in any and every way possible.
