As a student-athlete, I have always been driven by a deep passion for sports and academics, and have always striven to challenge myself as a person whether it be in the classroom or on the court. Throughout my athletic career, I have faced many challenges and obstacles, which have only positively fueled my determination and strengthened my resolve. Through the adversity in overcoming injuries, facing tough opponents, or battling through setbacks, I have always maintained a steadfast commitment to my sport, my teammates, and my personal growth goals.
I have played many sports including soccer, gymnastics, cross country running, and cheerleading to name a few, and I believe playing other sports is crucial in the development of a well-rounded athlete. I've also achieved much success at the highest level in other sports, including being a National Champion. My parents truly believe and have instilled in me that playing a sport is not only about having great athleticism and skill, but is also about character development and how to be a positive and helpful human being. My father was an NCAA 1st Team All-American and two-time All-Conference team selection in Men's Golf, and he has had a huge impact in my development not only athletically, but also academically.
I have played club volleyball for 5 years, and I am currently the captain of the 17U Leaside Fury rep volleyball team in Toronto, Ontario. As captain, I am humbled and proud of my teammates, and together we have had much success this year being ranked as one of the best programs in the province. Positionally, I am an outside hitter for my current team, and for my high school team I am an outside hitter and libero. I believe that my versatility on the court is a very strong asset. As a servant-leader to my team, I am a supportive to them on each and every point, and I am regarded as a very coachable athlete. Through my experience in sports, I have learned the true importance of mental fortitude, teamwork and communication, whether it's working together to execute a perfect play, communicating with my teammates to ensure we are all on the same page, or pushing through a tough match to come out victorious.
Being a team leader has allowed me to embrace the differences in character, value, attitude and feelings that exist among different people with different backgrounds. The most valuable lesson I have learned thus far is I can do little or nothing while alone, but I can achieve much with togetherness. This has greatly developed my positive attitude of cohesion, and has really helped me in any setting that is success motivated. With my talent alone, I could not have won, but as a unified team with the same goals, we have achieved much success. I have learnt that my self-sacrifice does not only add to my success, but also the success and importance to people who depend on me through the importance of teamwork and communication.
As I look to the future I am excited by the opportunities that lie ahead, and I know that there will be many more challenges to face and hurdles to overcome, but I am confident in my abilities and mental toughness which will allow me to achieve even more success and grow as a person. Above all, I am committed to being a positive role model for others, and I believe that sports have the power to inspire and to transform lives, and I am proud to be part of a community that embodies these values. Through my commitment to excellence, my dedication to my sport, and my desire to inspire others, I hope to leave a lasting legacy both on and off the court.
Thank you for considering me for your team, and taking the time out of your day. I look forward to further discussing with you how I can further my education, be a valued asset, and make an immediate impact to your program.
Best Regards,
Olivia McVeigh
