I have been playing volleyball since my fourth grade PE class taught use how to serve a ball. I started with local rec leagues, progressed to club level competition, and even played a few years for my schools. I was told early on that I had good hands, and I was immediately put in setter training. I love being the setter on my team because of the unique leadership role a setter has to have. I work hard to communicate and lead my team.
Volleyball has helped me through some difficult times, and I am thankful and blessed for the training, teammates, and coaches I have had in my life. During middle school, my family went through some changes. My dad developed PTSD from his time in the Air Force. It was a shock because the PTSD came 20 years after his service to our country ended. The PTSD caused lots of problems including an inability to walk, daily headaches, and lots of neurological issues. We ended up moving in with my grandparents since my mom's teacher salary couldn't pay all of the bills and we needed help with dad. During all of this time, my parents continued to support my success in volleyball. Volleyball kept and continues to keep me grounded through this. I knew that on the court I would work hard and continue to grow as an athlete and a teammate.
Through volleyball, I have learned the benefit of hard work. I am one of the first athletes in the gym on training days, and I love getting one-on-one work with our club coaches. I have also learned the value of being a teammate both on and off the court.
It's exciting to think about college. I have loved journalism and photography for many years and will be seeking a communications degree in journalism. It would also be a blessing to be able to play volleyball for the college I attend.
