Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Mianna Cardenas, but everyone calls me Mia. I will be an incoming senior at Kelly Walsh Highschool.  I have been playing volleyball and basketball for 8 years now. I have played throughout all of my school years including club teams like AAU and USA. My goal is to continue playing for as long as I can. Even though, I am currently playing as a middle blocker, I am very open to playing in any position that the team needs.  I believe that there is always room to grow in any skill. I strive to be a leader on and off the court by spreading positive and supportive energy.  I have been told over the years by a variety of coaches, in both sports, that I am extremely coachable, passionate, have a competitive drive, and keen knowledge of the game of volleyball. In academics my goal is to maintain a  3.5 or higher GPA. I currently hold a 3.7 GPA in highschool.  In college, I would like to pursue a degree in the medical field.

Arm speed and power are key to that can translate into a more powerful swing. You have a good approach when you are explosive and quick and are transitioning fast and to your spot. Keep the ball in front of you so that you have more hitting options. Add Gap hits into your arsenal to create more opportunities to terminate. Ability To Hit Slide : 3- Continue practicing slide attack footwork to improve hitting off one foot. Continue to work on developing your speed into the slide and using your arm drive to elevate. Great job trying to incorporate some slides into game play. Ask your coach for more reps during practice so you can connect with the setter and be on the correct step when the ball is in the setter's hand. Watch film of yourself to see if you are driving off of one foot. Available To Hit Every Ball/Scoring In Every Play : 3 Being available only comes with hard work in transition, work to be off the net. As a middle, a quick arm swing and precision when attacking will help you be successful and terminal. Find ways to score when you do not get an ideal set; tipping over the block or forcing the other team's setter to play defense. Blocking : 4- You have very disciplined body control and blocking footwork, great job. Before the serve, be balanced and loaded to make quicker, more dynamic first steps. Great job using Ball, Setter, Ball, Hitter eye sequence and pressing over the net to score lots of stuff blocks for your team. Continue to work to close the block and commit to blocking every attack. Quick Attack Timing : 3 Keep close to the setter on your last two steps of your approach. Consistent timing will help your setter deliver the ball to you in your hitting window more often. Judge the pass or dig so that you can adjust your approach to allow you to be on the right step. Transition To Hit : 3- Practice transition footwork from different blocking locations along the net to become more familiar with footwork. Always make sure that you demand the ball in transition to hold your blocker and let your setter know you are available. Make sure you are making a full transition. it will help you to get above the ball. Serving Ability : 3 More serving reps to develop consistency with your float serve; your goal should be 9 out of 10 driven serves to a target area. The footwork for your jump float serve needs to mimic your approach. You have good potential in serving area in terms of aggressiveness and consistency. Get lots of reps using your four-step jump float serve so you can use it confidently in games. Contact flat through your line with a straight, flat, tight hand. Add seams and zones to your arsenal to continue increasing the aggressiveness of your serve. Cognitive Emphasis Court Sense/Volleyball IQ : 3+ Coachability : 5 Attempts To Execute : 4- Competitiveness : 4- Overall Communication : 3+ Leadership : 3 Team Player : 4 Cognitive Comments Continue to be a student of the game by watching film of yourself and asking questions. Keep being coachable and applying learned techniques in your future practice and training sessions. Great job being a teammate on the floor, continue to build your leadership skills by being vocal before, during and after rallies. You have so much potential, have a good volleyball IQ and are so eager to learn. Keep up the hard work, leadership and supporting your team. Physiology Emphasis Overall Conditioning : 3+ Upper Body Strength : 3+ Lower Body Strength : 3 Court Speed : 3+ Physiology Comments Work on being in a lower and loaded ready position always; improve this with core and lower body strengthening. Continue to focus on your foot speed and directional steps, avoiding false steps that do not help your movement. You have physical potential to be a well-rounded player, you need more strength training and experience to get to the next level. Overall Comments Mianna, it was such a pleasure to have you at camp this week! I really liked that you love to compete! You were a great teammate, very coachable, and an absolute pleasure to watch grow each day. You will quickly make it to the next level as you strengthen your reading capabilities on defense (Ball, Setter, Ball, Hitter eye sequence), become more confident with your footwork on tempo sets, and increase the aggressiveness of your jump float serves. I would like to see your have more vocal confidence with your teammates. This will help develop court leadership and also connect with your setter. Continue to reflect on each play to make corrections. Keep working with your setters to gain trust. Continue to learn and study the game and you will only improve. You did a fantastic job developing as a stronger middle throughout the camp and I know you’ll continue on that path! I wish you all the very best in the future.
