Personal Statement
In 2012 at a summer polo camp I was introduced to the sport and was certain this was what I wanted to pursue. With my strong swimming and field hockey background, I couldn't have imagined a better fit for me. My goal is to become the best player I can be, while still being able to focus on my academics.
My competitive nature and hardworking personality is what has carried me this far in my short career. I am a very good swimmer due to the years of training as a competitive swimmer. This has instilled a sense of discipline, sacrifice and commitment which has helped me in all facets of life, especially academics. I've always had a very busy extramural program which has taught me how to prioritize and work well under pressure.
My strengths as a player include the ability to keep a cool head during matches, to read the game well and to communicate in the water. At the same time, my sense of urgency and perseverance is also evident in the pool. I am the fittest player in my team and could be described as the "work-horse" of the team. I am generally a utility player, but have a lot of experience as a hole-man as it was my previous position. This has given me the opportunity for a lot of training when it comes to "holding my water" and staying strong on the ball. This makes me a good asset to have in a team because I am able to "post-up" very well when pulling a double hole.
Although water polo is very important to me, academics is always my number one priority. I am an A-candidate at school and very involved in school life. My busy schedule has molded me into a well-rounded individual and I adapt very well to change.
Opportunities to excel in a sport such as water polo are limited in South Africa and I want to give myself the best chance possible to live up to my full potential by coming to play in the States.
