My name is Mia Mattingly and I am interested in playing water polo collegiately. I first started with aquatic sports in second grade when I started swimming; however, I did not take it seriously until seventh grade. Around that time, I realized that while I do enjoy swimming, I needed a change. Since I love spending so much time in the water, my mom suggested I try water polo and I was instantly hooked. Fast forward to now and I can’t imagine my life without it.
While I am undecided on the exact discipline I wish to pursue, I want to attend a college that has a rigorous academic curriculum partnered with a strong woman’s water polo team and aquatic program. Academically, my interests include health services and the sciences. I am a honors level student in accelerated and advanced placement classes.
In the water, I believe that I have strong defensive skills, excellent endurance, and a strong understanding of the game. I am coachable and approach every practice with intensity of the game. Personally, I think my work ethic is strong, which is why I can manage sports, academics, and clubs.
In my high school water polo off season, I swim on my high school’s varsity swim team, play club polo, coach my club swim team’s ten and under swimmers, participate in Red Cross club (where I am the treasurer), help out with CV Mini-thon and work as a lifeguard periodically. All of these activities keep me busy and help me to keep my skills sharp and my physical stamina at its best.
All in all, I believe I am a good candidate for recruitment not only because I am hardworking and passionate about water polo, but because in and out of the pool I always push myself to my fullest potential. I am aware how lucky I would be to play in college, but I am very much looking forward to taking my game to the next level.
