Hi, I’m Hailey, and I am a four-year varsity wrestler at Cajon High School. I earned a varsity spot on the team in my freshman year at 111 lbs. In my sophomore year I qualified for the CIF Masters Meet competition at 111 lbs, and in my junior year made it to the second day of that competition at 116 lbs.
As a freshman, I earned the Coach’s Award for my willingness to learn and dedicate my time to a sport that was new to me. As a sophomore, I was voted Most Improved by my coaches. Now a senior, I am so grateful to officially claim the title of Team Captain.
With that title comes a lot of responsibility and respect, but I did not achieve the trust of my teammates by winning matches or placing at tournaments. I became a leader by losing matches, and coming into practice the next day ready to improve. I did not tear my teammates down after losing, but I also did not tell them they deserved to win when they lost. I was honest, helped them learn, and was always there to give words of encouragement.
My goal in the future is to not let the pandemic deter me from improving my skills. The future is unknown, but that is why being adaptable and resilient is important to me. I want to graduate and earn my bachelor’s degree, all while pursuing my passion: wrestling. The moment my foot hit the mat I fell in love with this sport, and I can’t imagine not continuing to wrestle after high school.
