Hello, I'm Sienna Landrum, currently a senior. My journey started at the age of 7 on the mat, training and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. By the time I was 12, in 7th grade, I joined the wrestling team after attending an all-girls wrestling clinic. I made the decision to join the boys' team to enhance my takedowns for BJJ. Surprisingly, I developed a deep passion for wrestling. Despite qualifying for the state youth Championship, it was canceled due to Covid. During the pandemic, I trained at home and locally with a nearby club, attending national events in Oklahoma and Tulsa with the PATeam.
As a freshman, being the only girl on the team, I competed in both the JV and Varsity Boys lineups. I managed to complete the entire regular season without being pinned. The state held its first year of girl's regionals where I secured 2nd place, eventually moving on to the state tournament where I also placed 2nd. In freestyle, I qualified for Fargo and participated in women's nationals in Fort Worth and Fargo, ND with the PA team.
In my sophomore year, I had the opportunity to compete in boys' JV and Varsity lineups while also participating in more girls' events. I secured 2nd place at regionals and 3rd at states. In freestyle, I won 16U and Junior PA Freestyle states, earning a spot at Fargo Nationals. During my sophomore year, I collaborated with my coach to organize Girls Try It nights to introduce wrestling to girls of all ages. It was very fulfilling to witness girls embarking on their wrestling journey.
In my junior year, we initiated the first girls' team at our school when PA sanctioned girls' wrestling. I had the honor of captaining our team of four girls. This year has been gratifying as I supported my teammates in embracing this sport. My in-season record stands at 33-4, with 32 wins by pin, two losses, and two forfeits due to injury. Our ongoing focus remains on attracting more girls to this sport.
This year marks a turning point in my wrestling journey. I've evolved significantly as a wrestler, particularly honing my mental game, self-belief, and pushing myself to new heights. Years of wrestling boys molded me into a defensive wrestler, but this year, I concentrated on improving my offensive skills, resulting in a more well-rounded and enhanced wrestler. I have big goals for my senior season.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I'm eager to conclude my wrestling career at West and explore opportunities to continue wrestling while pursuing a nursing degree in college.
