My name is Maxemiliano Guilin and currently attending Vincent Memorial Catholic High School (VMHS) class of 2020 in the city of Calexico, California.
I started wrestling when I was nine years old with the Calexico Jr. Wrestling program. At first, it was a way to stay in shape after football season, but after a while, I grew a bond with wrestling and it became my lifestyle. After several years wrestling for Calexico, the program shut down so we moved to other nearby cities to wrestle sometimes driving up to an hour just to get a little mat time. In my freshman year at VMCHS, I was unable to wrestle because the school did not have a wrestling program, so we looked at where I could get mat time and found a wrestling program in Mexicali, Mexico where they had a Freestyle/ Greco program year around. During my off-season and freshman year, I would travel to practice in Mexico. To get to my practice I would have to commute by taking several buses which took up to 1 hour one way to be at practice on time. I was chosen to compete with the freestyle jr team and have competed in several cities throughout Mexico.
In the summer before my sophomore year, I talk to my Dad and thought it would be a great opportunity to start the wrestling program at the school I was attending. We talk to the school administrators and were able to convince them of starting a Wrestling program or at least permitting for me to compete in High School wrestling which the administrator agreed. On my sophomore year, the school did not have the equipment nor wrestling teammates so the school Athletic director reached out to the local high school and was able to get Mat time with them.
Since I was unable to compete in local duals during my sophomore year with local High Schools I was traveling every weekend 4 hours to be able to compete in tournaments and get the necessary matches in the San Diego area to compete in CIF. My sophomore year I finished 4th in CIF and competed in Masters for the season. My Junior year I was able to get Mat time with another local school, Holtville High School which is located about 12 miles away from where I currently practice. In my Junior year, I was able to compete in local duals in the Imperial Valley League (IVL) and went undefeated will all wins by pin. I went to CIF and placed 3rd and then competed at Masters and placed 7th. This year I will compete in IVL and hoping to duplicate and surpass last season record and ultimately finish stronger. Finishing stronger will give me a better position going into CIF and ultimately compete in Masters and move to State tournament.
This year I will have a tough schedule in academically but I will be taking several AP classes and
finish with a 4.0 GPA or better and graduate with an “A” honor roll. In these past years, I have overcome many adversities and numerous obstacles to wrestle. Even though I have had lots of doors closed, I have managed to overcome them and succeed. My strongest supporters through thick and thin have been my Mom and Dad and have supported me 100%. Even though I have not had VMHS wrestling teammates my adopted schools have taught me hard work pays off and anything I put my mind I can accomplish.
