I have been playing ice hockey since I was five years old. I started out learning the game, primarily playing defence, and by the age of nine I know I wanted to be a goaltender. Watching Hockey Night in Canada, my favourite player was Carey Price. He was always calm when playing in net, allowing his team to relax and play with confidence. This is something that I strive to do for my team when I play in net, something that has also been said by game commentators about me.
I have a desire to push myself towards excellence, both on the ice and with my academics. To be able to play hockey at the collegiate level, is my next goal. I also recognize the value of an education, how I can apply what I have learned to my career, and most importantly, to give something back to those aspiring to pursue hockey and academics - to be well rounded.
I have played other team sports such as lacrosse, rugby and football. Although I have had great success in each of these sports -- being nominated by my teammates and coaches to serve as captain in both lacrosse and football -- the one sport that continues to be my singular pursuit is hockey.
My coaches have found me to be a good listener, and a coachable athlete. I look to improve myself through hard-work, talent, and perseverance. I am a team player, putting the needs of the team ahead my personal desires. As a hockey goalie, our wins and losses are celebrated and worked through together.
I take my same athletic listening skills and determination to the classroom. I look to be a positive impact within the classroom, while being a role model for younger students. I look forward to increased responsibilities throughout the school year, while further developing my leadership skills.
I volunteer at Nightshift Street Ministries, and recently Church on 5. Both of these organizations work within the community, feeding people who are less fortunate. A fond memory I have with my team a few years ago is when I helped to organize a clothing drive. The clothing collected was presented to Nightshift Ministries for distribution to those in greater need. I also had the opportunity to teach younger children in Africa on a special trip that I took with my grandmother.
I want to attend college, as a pursuit to play with the best athletes. I have a desire to learn, and as part of my goals, to continue to improve and achieve excellence, and explore my future potential. To have this opportunity to give back, and make my parents, coaches, team, and my school proud.
