I was once asked how long ago I knew I wanted to be a catcher and my immediate response was, "the first time I picked up a ball". My Rec Ball coach came and saw me play at the semifinals game this year and made the comment to my parents, "I knew this would be where I would see him". He told them he kept asking me back when I was five, if I was sure I didn't want to try another position and I would always reply " I want to catch Coach".
I have played several other positions in baseball. I pitched the whole final game at my districts finals and we won districts that year. A very special moment because my little brother, a year behind me, was on the team as well. I love playing third base. In truth, I love everything about baseball. I like the strategy involved, the moments of intensity and what it takes to bring a team together. My love is catching though, and I have been the starting catcher for all my junior high and high school career.
It's true, I always knew my days would be spent on the field in any capacity that I could. My heart and passion are there. It has been my dream to play baseball at the collegiate level since that day that I picked up that ball. I truly believe baseball is the best sport in the world. I have respect for all sports though and understand the importance sports play in the lives of others. I plan to pursue a degree in journalism and communications so that I can continue to be involved in sports in some aspect for the rest of my life.
Growing up in baseball with Rec Ball, CBR, Travel Ball, and school I have received Most Valuable Player several times, which I proudly display in my room, but those are not the reasons I play the game the way that I do. I give 110% every time I'm out there because I wouldn't be me if I didn't. I also understand I need to be there for my team and keep that level of intensity going with them providing leadership, motivation and support.
I am a person who will do everything in my ability to do what is asked of me. I understand the game am and always thinking and searching for ways it can be done better. I thrive on my ability to become better and being coached. I respect the sport and value every aspect it takes to be part of a team. I look forward to moving on to the next level and see where I can take my abilities and grow with a team at the collegiate level. I can promise you I will give you everything in mind, body and spirit. Thank you for time.
Sincerely,
Garrett Garfield
