I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. When my family moved to America I was a seven-year old and I was focused only on soccer. Then I saw the local baseball field and decided it was a sport I had to try. It wasn’t easy getting started. I was the only lefty on my team, and before the practices started I hadn’t learned to throw a ball or swing a bat like the other kids. Still, I have always been fortunate to have good coaches. What I learned that summer (how to throw a baseball, how to swing a bat and how to have fun on a diamond) stuck with me to this day. I never went back to soccer and for the past decade, I have thrown all of my talent and energy into my one chosen sport.
Along with being a student-athlete, I work 26 hours a week at a local hardware store. I continually make every effort to advance my progress on the baseball field where I have a low ERA and a high batting average. What my job has offered me is an ability to manage my time wisely and develop a better sense of who I am and what I am capable of accomplishing. Hard work and humility are family traditions! I feel fortunate that I am one of the few lefty pitchers on my high school and club baseball teams, but I know that with this comes a responsibility to live up to high expectations. I can throw the ball hard now, but I know that I can work to throw it harder with more time in the gym. I have good movement on each pitch, but there is more to be learned and applied to get that ball to move further! I will keep working hard and I hope to find a school that will fit with my desire to progress my skills as a pitcher and position player. That school will also allow me to continue to develop in the classroom and pursue a degree that will help me progress long after my degree is in hand.
