Sports and education have always been important for me. My entire life, my parents have been educators and coaches. Being surrounded by that has shown me great, and not so great, examples of how to be a successful student athlete. I write this as I am a student at Winnebago High School. I want to use my successes and learning experiences to attend college, play for and represent that college through athletics, and graduate with the skills to have a sport driven career.
As a very young child, I was diagnosed with ADHD-Combined Type. This affected the way I processed and understood information, as well as my ability to organize my thoughts and physical energy as a younger student. My parents, coaches, and some fantastic teachers realized I needed to move to learn. I participated in every sport and activity from T-ball to tumbling. Baseball became my first passion, followed by golf and basketball. I've learned to translate my successes in sport into my academics. I've been given the opportunity to share my experiences and skills with peers and younger players who may have situations like mine. Through these experiences, I learned how to be a better self advocate and to be in a leadership role. I find great satisfaction in providing encouragement to others.
Throughout my high school career, I have been a three sport athlete. One of my proudest accomplishments was making the JV baseball team as a Freshman. There were many upperclassmen that year. I was the starting second baseman, as well as being the team’s utility player. As a Freshman, I also represented my school on the JV golf team, finishing in the top ten of the conference. I was a starter and captain on the Freshman basketball team. I also played on the JV basketball team, playing as a starter at the end of the season. Learning to balance academics and athletics my freshman year was a challenge at first. I self advocated, spoke with teachers and coaches, and they helped me learn how to find balance. Once my travel baseball season started, I had a system that worked for me and I finished with a strong GPA. My Sophomore year, Covid-19 hit, and sports were put on hold. I made the Varsity baseball team, however, our season was canceled just before it was supposed to begin. Junior year 20-21, I returned to the field with my varsity team as a starter and captain. Our team was strong, winning our first regional and sectional championship in school history.
As a travel baseball player, I have traveled throughout the midwest and southeast with my team. While there is no “i” in team, I know I have to be committed, I have to condition, I have to lift, and I have to train to support the greater good of my team. I want to participate in a college program that has student athletes who are driven to succeed and support each other both on and off the field.
I am a coachable player, a student wanting and willing to learn. The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly changed how many student athletes are thinking about their future playing and college decisions. Mine remains the same. I want to go where I will play, and I want a degree that leads to a career.
