A change took place in my life by simply making an observation on my way home from school one day. I passed several baseball fields and noticed how different and fun the sport looked compared to soccer. (the current sport I was playing). At age seven, I left soccer behind to play baseball. This change was on the extreme side because I knew nothing about baseball.
I joined the Northwest Rankin Recreation Baseball Team and my observation was correct. It was fun and different, but required a lot of hard work and practice. However, my goal was to be the best player I could be. To achieve my goal, I knew I had to become great at practicing on the field and at home. My skills developed with practice and I played all positions with the team.
I was chosen to play two different positions for “All Stars” Northwest Rankin Baseball Team two years in a row by unanimous vote. Our team won second place in the Northwest Rankin Baseball Tournament.
I am always looking for a program that will push me to another level. The chance came when I was chosen to play for three different travel select baseball teams in one year. Before being selected, I tried out for other travel select teams but received no response. My determination was to put forth all the effort I had to get better. The first year I tried out for two teams and did not make either one. The following year I tried out for three different teams and made all three. I chose the team with the coach that I felt would be a good motivator and challenge me to keep getting better.
That experience taught me the value of determination, hard work, dedication, and persistence. The only way to get better was to push myself to the limit and never give up. Presently, I play first base and pitcher for the Stingers Travel Select Baseball Team. I lead by example and show high spirit in a win or lose situation.
After graduating from high school, my goal in college is to get a degree in mechanical engineering and play baseball. Therefore, I will be looking for a college that rates high in academics as well as sports, especially baseball. I believe I have the desire and motivation to be successful in both areas.
