Hello! I am probably not your typical story of "loving baseball since I could walk". I actually found my love of baseball my 7th grade year. My 7/8th grade years were spent catching up and catching on pretty fast. I played junior high at my school and then onto Babe Ruth the next two summers, I was hooked!
9th gr. year I played JV for HS then Babe Ruth and Legion at the same time. 2 teams, 2 practices all summer. It was a lot of work but I really feel that it helped me with the late start in baseball. That led me to be on the JV & Varsity team in my 10th grade high school ball career. And being a versatile player on Legion (outfield, 3rd base, catcher, & pitcher) this summer. So, I would say I've learned: hard work, determination, and being a team player has paid off.
I am not sure if I would qualify it as an "obstacle" but I will mention that I am home schooled. I have been in Boy Scouts (Rank of Life Scout) and 4-H since I was 6. Also my best buddies & hunting friends are in the grade above, below and my class. So that helped with the fitting in on the team part of it, but when you are not part of every day school, sometimes its has been a challenge to connect with coaches and some players that aren't already your friends. Another obstacle, our varsity team only won 3 games this last year with a new coach after the head coach retired after 20+ years.
One of my best skills is that I am very supportive of my teammates when things are going good and when they are going bad. Also, I am a team player and I have a good work ethic. I think that comes from my family. We have a 5000 acre farm and around 80 cows. My Dad, Mom, Grandpa, older brother, younger brother, & sister in law, all have their roles on the farm. It doesn't work if we don't work hard and together.
Academically, I would like to go to school that has some Agriculture based degrees, so when I come back to farm, it will add something to our family farm.
I am really just looking forward to continuing to play baseball and attending school. I've set this goal and I am willing to work hard to get it.
Thanks for your time,
Owen McKinven
