Personal Statement

My name is Ashton Wheelock. I am a 17-year old Senior at Lakeside High School, located in Ashtabula, Ohio. My goal is to play baseball and compete at the highest level possible. I have dreamed of playing college baseball ever since I was a little kid. I am a very coachable and competitive player. I work year-round to achieve my goals by working out and staying active at a high level. My character is one of the biggest attributes that makes me a good student athlete. I show great sportsmanship and dedication. I work hard to be a positive example for my team, school, and community. I have a 3.8 GPA, while taking honor classes. My grades are important to me and I have always strived for high academics. I am hoping to find a college where I can contribute to the program’s success, and one that helps me achieve my ultimate goal of playing college baseball.

Ashton is a lean OF who has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying outstanding hitting / power potential through a squared setup. Hands are quick (86 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Ashton has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Hit: Right-handed hitter that starts in an upright setup. Smooth, simple load that lead to a balance launch. Ball really comes off well when squared. His ability to stay inside the baseball leads to regular backspin. Power: Physical with above average bat speed. Ball jumps. Gap abilities. Offensive Projection: Middle ceiling. Max BP Exit Velocity: 92mph. Max BP Distance: 351ft. Field: Corner look in the outfield. Athletic feet with a smooth tempo. Solid showing. Throw: Clean arm with more to come. Defensive Projection: Corner. Scouting Notes: One of the top arms in his group. Clean arm with athleticism to his delivery. Also showed quality secondary offerings. Fastball: 78-80mph. Fastball Spin Rate: 1790-1920 Breaking Ball: 67-68mph. Breaking Ball Spin Rate: 1729-1830 Changeup: 70-72mph.

Scouting Notes: Fluid tempo to a delivery that doesn’t require much effort. Looks like he can repeat wel. Arm is loose/works through a near high-¾ slot. Everything comes together well. Should see easy velo jumps as he matures physically. Fastball: 74-77mph. Regular run/dive. Fastball Spin Rate:1549-1761 Curveball: 65-68mph. Solid offering, later bite. Curveball Spin Rate:1500-1670 Changeup: Tossed a forkball that had consistent down action. Hit:Right-handed hitter that starts in a balanced stance. Uses a toe turn timing trigger during slight back load to hands. Very fluid movements prior to launch. Balanced swing with a natural whip. Like the combination of physicality and bat speed to swing. Solid round. Power:Easy gap pop. Offensive Projection:Middle potential. Max BP Exit:87 mph Max BP Distance:305 ft Field:In the outfield he plays fast with good tempo throughout. Ball skills appear to be on par for class. Solid defender. Throw:Respectable strength coming out of a 3/4 slot. Defensive Projection:Corner OF.
