I am a 17-year old senior at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. My goal is to be a stand-out student-athlete at a prestigious and competitive university that provides the opportunity to develop my academic and baseball potential to the greatest extent. I plan to major in business, with minor in computer science/engineering. My goal is to play baseball professionally, and then move into the business and financial management.
I am carrying a 3.68 GPA in Sophomore/Junior/Senior years of high school, with honor roll in 7 out of 9 quarters (with high honors for the latest quarter). I was awarded the Student-Athlete award during sophomore year for carrying GPA above 3.75 through first three quarters. As preparation for college studies in business, I am currently enrolled in School of Distinction for Business and Entrepreneurship, which provides advanced business courses and internship opportunities in junior and senior years of high school. My team won the 2020 Best Marketing Initiative award in junior year. For extracurricular academics, I lettered in Robotics Club, helping my team place 2nd in 2018 Pittsburgh Regionals, and 1st in 2019 Denver Regionals. I also play the drums (mostly classic rock), and volunteered for mission work in Dominican Republic (which unfortunately has been postponed due to the Corona virus).
In baseball, I have focused for the last 4-5 years on becoming an outstanding starting pitcher. Under guidance of Coach Jonathan Kountis (former minor league pitcher with the Mets and Blue Jays, as well as independent league stand-out), I have developed excellent mechanics and control on 4-seam, 2-seam, change-up and slider, while developing baseball IQ to manage games as a starting pitcher. I was anchor for the JV team in my sophomore year, and one of two underclassmen for spot call-up for Varsity. I was selected for Varsity starting rotation for the 2020 season (which unfortunately got canceled due to the CoronaVirus situation).
I have worked hard over the years to develop my baseball skills. At the end of every summer season, my coaches and I have set goals and plans to continuously improve both physical and pitching skills during the off-season. We set targets for pitching velocity and other numbers to achieve before the next season starts, and I do regular physical conditioning at Premier Fitness & Performance (under coach Mike Cava) to increase strength, power and flexibility (in addition to participating in the school’s off-season conditioning program). I have made excellent progress every year, with pre-season velocity of 54 mph at start of 2017 season, through 66 mph at 2018, 75 mph at 2019, and currently at 83-84 mph before 2020 tryouts. I expect to be at 90+ mph before start of college in Fall 2021. As my pitching coaches point out, like great starting pitchers, I get stronger as the game progresses, and as the season progresses.
I have overcome some significant personal challenges since my freshman year. I struggled with academics and grades during the freshman year (2017-18), and all aspects of my student life, including grades and other activities, suffered greatly. I had trouble with concentration and focus, and I struggled to plan and execute my tasks. During the spring semester, I was diagnosed with ADHD. After a lot of testing and analysis and discussion, we decided to change schools, to a smaller environment with closer interaction with teachers. With help from education counselors and my school and my parents, we made changes in routine and preparation that has helped me tremendously in all aspects of academics and extracurricular activities. My academic performance improved greatly after my freshman year, going from 2.2 GPA to 3.68 from sophomore year on.
On a personal level, I enjoy working with my teammates, helping and cheering them on during work-outs, practices and games. I am a very dedicated, coachable and competitive player, and I work year around to achieve my goals. I am hoping to find a college where I can contribute to the program’s success, and a program that helps me achieve my goal of being an excellent student-athlete.
