“How do you think that you appear to others?” This was one of the many questions that my high school coach included on our preseason team quiz. And what was my answer? I stated how I believed and hoped people saw me, but my conclusion is what I believe matters most. I said, “[h]ow people see you isn’t important, but what you do when no one is watching is what defines you.” As a catcher, you’re not often the one in the spotlight; however, what you do behind and at the plate to hold the team together and back-up your pitching staff is what helps define your team.
On a personal level, this statement resonates with me too. My high school's varsity baseball program is extremely competitive and has been very successful. Yet, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication behind the scenes each year to continue to improve. Playing in the baseball culture surrounding me has helped me mature both my physical and mental skills and abilities; plus, intrinsic motivation to improve and compete has allowed me to push to succeed further. I believe that I am prepared for the competitive culture of collegiate baseball.
I am interested in a program where I can continue to strive towards playing at my personal highest level. Aside from my statistics, my intangible strong suits are framing, blocking, pitch calling, and communication. I am a team leader, and am looking forward to building relationships with my future teammates and coaching staff. I also am looking forward to excelling in the classroom, and I know I am able to manage the workload of a college student-athlete. In high school, I have taken a full load of college classes, while at the same time being a three-sport athlete. I am confident that I will succeed both on the field and in the classroom wherever I continue.
