There are so many works of fiction that try to capture the essence of baseball; that try to distill it and show an audience that the game is something special. In books and films, it’s often talked about as something almost magical… something that changes the people who play it. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I’ve played baseball since I was five years old and it has definitely been a very important part of my life.
The game has taught me discipline, it has shown me what commitment really means and it has taught me the importance of sacrifice. I spend a lot of time trying to get better, honing my skills and working to eliminate my weaknesses. In order to accomplish this, I’ve had to make some tough choices.
I’ve given up a lot of time hanging out with my friends and going to things that would be a lot of fun in order to get better, but I haven’t decided to do so entirely for myself. Ever since I started playing, my whole family has come to watch my games. My mom, my dad, my sister… but also my grandparents, and great grandparents, my aunts and uncles and even some of my cousins show up. Baseball brings people together. It has introduced me to new people and strengthened my friendships with others. It has given me a lot, and has provided me with the motivation to work harder in other aspects of my life.
I want to keep playing ball for as long as I can and I am committed to making that a reality.
