Faith, family, and hard work. It’s what goes with me to the field, to the gym, in the classroom and in life. My parents, who have known each other since the age of 5, and now have five kids of their own, have always modeled and preached this as a way of life to me and my siblings. They have always supported and encouraged us to be the best, whatever we were doing.
Me, I always loved the game of baseball, but honestly, I wasn’t very good at first. In fact, I was just plain bad. Having a summer birthday, I am usually the youngest kid in my class. This affected me in many ways. Early on, I struggled academically, physically, and even socially. I have often felt throughout the years that I was undersized, overlooked, and undervalued. I just wanted to play. One of my first coaches challenged me. He said if I wanted to play more, I had to put the time in off-season. I had to throw more, hit more, and catch more. If I did that, I might get an opportunity to play more. Maybe even make the all-star team. I don’t think anyone expected me to stick with it after that 9U season. However, that summer and fall, I never went a day without a bat, a ball, and a glove. I went back, and I made that all-star team the following summer, and every year since.
Today, I’m proud to say, I get to play for my school, a great travel organization, and I still play for that same coach who challenged me 7 years ago. I am looking forward to finding a school and a program that I can bring that work ethic, determination, and grit to. To do what needs to be done to succeed on the field and in the classroom. I believe I have the talent. I know I will put in the effort and time. Without baseball, I’m not sure where I’d be. I believe God gives everyone different talents and skills, but what we do with them is up to us. If we put in the work and prepare, there’s no telling where He’ll take us. My dad always says, God can move mountains, but you’d better bring a shovel.
