My name is Fernando Camacho. I am 17 years old, 6'2 and 155lbs. I am a student of the University of High School (UHS), which is one of the most prestigious schools in Puerto Rico. I also play the saxophone in my school band and I am part of the Chess Club in the school. I've always been an intelligent and responsible student, so my goals are to be able to study in a university that has a great baseball program and specially being high ranked academically. I want to study Chemistry, Biology or Engineering because I have always possessed a passion for STEM related topics and careers. For example, I am currently investigating in my science fair the viability of piezoelectric machinery to develop a platform to generate electricity. When I grow up, I would like to be a chemical engineer or a Marine Biologist because I think I would excel at them and I have already experienced working with both careers.
I have played baseball since I was 5 years old and have always dreamed of growing up and becoming a big leaguer. My cousin is José De León, who currently plays for the Cincinnati Reds and I am trying to follow his footsteps and surpass everything he went through. I am a pitcher just like him, who has very good control of the strike zone, as all of my coaches always say. I truly apreciate the work they (the coaches) have done with me and my improvement. I currently play at Los Potros from Las Lomas and my team coach is Miguel Negrón, who was a first round pick (8th overall) in the 2000 draft. I also train with my Pitching Coach Giancarlo Alvarado, former Puertorican professional player and works for the San Diego Padres. I throw Fastball, Curveball, Changeup, Slider and I am trying to learn the Split-finger. I throw 79 mph with Fastball, Changeup 69-70 mph and 65 my curveball. Most of my coaches have praised me for my leadership on the field. Off the field, I can be very serious or sometimes shy, but when I step in the field, I put it all in and motivate my teammates not just to get the win, but also we as a team try our best to have a good and fun game. I think leadership on the field is one of my top qualities that separate me from other recruits and makes me a complete player.
