Over the past three years I learned a lot about myself and the character of a man in general. Winning the Homeschool World Series as a sophomore was certainly the highlight of my high school career. We lost only five out of forty plus games all season; we beat the best of the best private schools in North Texas; and went 6-0 in Florida to clinch the title in the top division. My junior season was a different story all together. I remember my dad telling me “it’s easy to get locked in when things are going well; but it’s how big you play when things aren’t going well that define you as a player; the physical game will be the same but the mental part of the game will be unlike anything you’ve experienced before”. He was absolutely right. After losing ten seniors and six other skilled players, we won only five games all season. It challenged me mentally more than anything else; it was an absolute grind. And, though I didn’t like it at the time, my dad checked me all season long with hard love to make sure I was dominating the mental game. Senior season, what can I say? I worked my tail off last off season and things were rolling; not going to harp on the negatives of season being cancelled. It is what it is, press on. I'm working out harder then ever; I'm studying for the ACT/SAT in preparation for a reschedule date; and I'll be graduating on May 9th with a near 4.0.
In short, I learned that the mental game effects the physical and the team. And, that winning happens first mentally then physically.
I’m an athlete and a student who just happens to be home-schooled. I can’t say I played for Colleyville Heritage or Arlington Martin but I am ready to compete at the next level and I know I can contribute both on and off the field.
