I am Dallas Brown, and I am a Sophomore at Burkburnett High School. I am 5' 11" tall and weigh 165 pounds. Last season was my first season of high school baseball. I played with the Junior Varsity squad. I usually pitched and played third base, and occasionally played first base. I also have some experience at shortstop. Those are my primary positions, but I play whatever position my coaches need me to play. I bat right and throw right.
Baseball has played an important role in my life. While I have participated in other youth sports like football and basketball, I've always been drawn to baseball for as far back as I can remember. One of my favorite toys as a toddler was a birthday gift I received from my grandfather - a Little Tikes T-Ball set. I would play with it in my backyard for hours. As I got older, my mother would toss the ball to me to hit. She noticed I had a talent for hitting the ball and shared that with my father. Soon, he was signing me up to play T-Ball. By the time I was 8 years old, I had decided that baseball would be the sport I focused on.
While baseball is my passion, I do make space in my life for other things. I started taking Taekwondo lessons when I was 7. I am a Brown Belt and I'm only two belts away from a Black Belt. I also play basketball. I play power forward and center on the JV squad, and on occasion I'll be pulled up to the Varsity team to play in some games.
I also enjoy music. I started learning to play drums when I was 5 years old. I was a percussionist with my middle school band, but I decided to leave band to focus on sports. Video gaming is also something I enjoy. I like playing games on my own or with friends. I find that it helps me unwind. I recently took up fishing and it has quickly become my favorite hobby.
I have always done well academically. I maintained an "A" average throughout elementary and middle school. I was selected to be a National Junior Honor Society member in 7th and 8th grade. I was selected to either the A Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, or the Principal's A Honor Roll during every reporting period throughout my middle school years. I was selected to the A/B Honor Roll in my freshman year. I currently take advanced classes in math and English. I plan to pursue a Degree in Astronomy or Engineering when I attend college.
During my time as a baseball player, I have always been more of an informal leader. I always try to lead by example. I work hard, pay attention to my coaches, and don't take plays off. I'm coachable and I play with a competitive fire. I want to be successful both personally and as part of a team, but I don't put my success ahead of the team. When I step on the field I am focused on doing my part to help the team be successful. Many people tell me I'm a good baseball player, but I always try to be humble and look for opportunities to get better.
I am working hard in the offseason with the goal of making the varsity squad this upcoming Spring. I've been weight training to improve my strength and stamina. I also worked with private instructors Victor Silverio Jr. and Anthony Fisher at Falls Baseball Academy in Wichita Falls, TX over the summer to improve my pitching, hitting, and fielding skills. I was selected to play for the KC Stealth 15U Fall team this Fall coached by Kelly Cross. During the Fall season I pitched and played every infield position. I even had the opportunity to play in the outfield. I am currently participating in a Winter Pitchers and Hitters camp with Coach Cross in preparation for the upcoming high school season.
I have been fortunate to have great coaches, instructors, and baseball mentors. I am also fortunate to have parents who support me. They are at every practice and every game, they take me to local baseball camps and showcases, and sign me up for private lessons. Those lessons and camps have helped me improve as a player. One camp that I enjoyed attending when I was younger was a camp conducted by former MLB catcher Camron Rupp. That camp helped me as a player because he helped with my mindset and approach to tee work. In the past I have also worked with former Texas Tech pitcher Ethan Coombes to improve my pitching. He helped me understand the importance of mechanics. Every one of my coaches and instructors have helped me grow as a player and I am grateful for that.
When I was 8 years old I told my parents that I wanted to play Major League Baseball. Since then, I have made that my goal. And when I set my mind to accomplishing a goal I am determind to achieve it. I take my school work seriously and pride myself on my grades. In addition to camp and private instruction, I work on improving my baseball skills outside of team practices by using the batting cages and bullpen mounds after school hours. I do tee work and fielding drills at home. I also have a small ball pitching machine set up in my garage that I use for vision and reaction training. I hit the weight room at school every morning before classes start. I know that I am talented, but I also know talent alone isn't enough.
I look forward to the opportunity to show that I'm the kind of player that is the right fit for your program. I believe I have the talent, work ethic, and mindset that coaches look for in a baseball player.
