My name is Kirk Waller. I am a right-handed pitcher and infielder, although I have played competitively at every position. My goal is to play baseball at a school that is academically challenging and successful on the field. I attend St. John's School in Houston, the most academically rigorous private high school in Texas. I am currently taking an advanced math and science curriculum and carrying a High Honors average.
I started playing baseball at age 4 and started playing year-round at age 7. One of my first tournament team coaches was Jeff McCurry, who pitched for the Rockies and the Astros. I have him to thank for not letting my dad "fix" my delivery when I first dropped down (at age 8) to the low 3/4 release point that I use on the mound. "Don't touch him," Coach McCurry told my dad. "His ball is going to move like crazy."
I have been fortunate over the years to have great pitching coaches and mentors. I play varsity baseball at St. John's for Coach Clint Everts, first round pick of the Expos in 2002. I played tournament ball for the Los Tigres organization and Coach Rafael Gross, who played professionally for 17 years. I have trained for the last four years with Bobby Marquez, who pitched in the Expos and Brewers organizations.
In addition to pitching, I am a consistent line drive hitter, and I really can play anywhere, although my favorite position other than pitcher is third base. I play with quiet confidence. No showboating, no trash talk. I keep an even demeanor on the field, always. I know that I will get bigger and stronger as I continue to work in the gym and on the field.
Other than school and baseball, I am heavily involved in my church's youth group, and I enjoy community service through my school and my church. I have one sister, named Julia. She was an all-conference softball player and an academic standout at St. John's, and she now plays on the softball team at the University of Chicago.
