“Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half physical.” I feel this quote spoken by 1950s catcher Yogi Berra represents what I focus on to improve my game. Being primarily a catcher, I have learned to deal with emotions of the numerous pitchers with whom I have played. I have established a leadership role on my team (now as one of the statistically-strongest players on the team through my junior year) and try my hardest to establish a positive influence through a commitment to consistent practice throughout the week, mental intensity during workouts, and regular personal and electronic interaction with teammates throughout the year. As a junior I was named to the All-Region and All-Valley teams and honorable mention for All-State.
I fell in love with baseball from the moment I began playing catch with my dad in the backyard. I learned to bat left handed from my older sister and briefly afterwards began playing in coaches' pitch. After a year of recreational play when I turned seven, I began to love the game even more. But after a few years of playing in a competitive league, I learned to appreciate some of the other benefits that the game had to offer me. Previously being smaller than most of my teammates and opponents, I acquired the discipline to practice longer, work harder, and practice the right way; now that I have grown, my skills have become stronger than most of my competitors, and I still have plenty of growing to do. Through this, I also gained more and more respect for what my coaches and family sacrificed to help me improve my craft. I continue to use the fundamentals I’ve learned to compete at higher and higher levels.
Above all, I take pride in my academic record, and my ultimate goal to preserve a 4.0 GPA through my high school career has resulted in a 3.95 GPA through three years. I also achieved this statistic while taking five AP classes thus far to challenge my abilities. I also excel in music, being involved in the most advanced band class as a trombone player. Contributing to the varsity team from my freshman year, I strive to be a major asset on my high school baseball team, and I hope my record and potential allow me to play successfully for a college program in the future.
