My name is Ashley Cogger and I'm a field hockey goalie in the Class of 2021 from San Diego, California. I play club with Rush Field Hockey and am the starting Varsity goalkeeper for Del Norte High School. I'm 5'10" tall, super coach-able, determined, and very competitive. I absolutely love playing goalie and I'm looking forward to continued growth, training, and hard work.
I love being part of a team. Supporting and working alongside a group of people with the same aspirations and goals as myself inspires me to work hard every minute I compete on the field. Being a vital part of a defensive unit and being able to see the game while directing the defense from my vantage point in goal is a feeling that I love. I play competitively and to win, knowing my team’s and my own success are based on how aggressive I am in goal, as well as on my decision making when faced with offensive shots. It is crucial that I be alert and ready for anything that comes my way throughout the game. This includes penalty strokes and 1v1s in a game (which are always exciting and something I really look forward to!). As a goalkeeper, I thrive under pressure, enjoying the thrill of anticipation for the shot with confidence in my skill. I know I am very dependable and am confident in my ability to defend, do my part, and be the backbone of my team.
Outside of Field Hockey, I am a member of the Del Norte High School Orchestra. I have been playing the cello for four years now and really enjoy being able to play music every day and find it very relaxing!
I also participate in an organization called the House of Pacific Relations -- Queens' Association. It is a young women's group that meets every other Sunday, whose goal is to spread cultural awareness by teaching others about our different backgrounds and ethnicity while actively helping our city through community service. I am in my fourth year in the program representing the House of Hungary.
Additionally, I decided to try out for my high school lacrosse team this past Spring season as a Sophomore in order to get in some reflexive cross training and shots in goal. I also thought it would be a fun experience and nice to have an additional sport to play for my school during the Spring. I made the varsity team as the starting goalie and quickly accepted the challenge of never having played in the lacrosse goal before. My lacrosse coach trusted my instincts as a Field Hockey goalie and knew I could translate my decision making skills and GK mentality to benefit the team. We ended our season making it to the Open Division for the first time ever in school history. As goalkeeper, I set the Del Norte High School Varsity lacrosse record for most GK saves (17 saves) in a CIF play-off game (against the #1 seed Scripps Ranch High School) and tied for fourth in Del Norte High School's all time lacrosse GK saves in a game. While I enjoy lacrosse, Field Hockey will forever be my number one passion.
