Personal Statement

Hi Coaches! My name is Avery Wease and I am a goalie from San Marcos, California in the class of 2026.

I love field hockey because of the team-centric nature of the sport. Hockey stands apart from other sports I've played (or really any other group activity or project I've been involved in), because success in field hockey demands that the entire team operates as a single, cohesive unit. As a goalie, I see the whole game in front of me, and have learned to anticipate ball movements before they happen. This game IQ is my biggest strength: I am constantly directing my teammates to adjust and mark the other players as they switch the field or drift into the circle. If all goes well, we make the adjustment before the shot so they can turnover the ball and get back on offense. (I do enjoy blocking the shots, too, though!)

Something that makes me unique is my positive attitude. I understand my importance to the team as a strategist, communicator, and last line of defense - but I am also my team's biggest fan, cheering them on and supporting them throughout the game! I love to see the team having fun and feeling proud of their performance, and I give them my unwavering support, win or lose.

I am so excited for college! I am looking forward to an environment that is all about learning and getting better, not just academically, but also athletically and personally. I am dedicated to continuous improvement for two primary reasons. Firstly, I simply want to be the best I can at whatever I do; whether it's on the hockey field, as an actor on the stage, out in the community or in the classroom, I strive to excel. Secondly, I know that everyone around me is getting better, too, especially in college. My competitors are learning new ways to score on me every day, so I need to work extra hard to not only keep pace, but to exceed their abilities.
