I had always been a competitive athlete. Ever since I was able to walk, I had been skiing competitively in the winters and swimming competitively year long. However, both of these sports were individual sports, and never taught me the characteristics of a team sport. Moving to the West Coast from Long Island, New York when I was 12 years old was a life-changing experience, in that it was my opportunity to play field hockey. During freshman year physical education, I found myself immensely interested in the field hockey unit. Almost immediately, I knew I wanted to play competitively. I had become dedicated to finding a field hockey association/club that could fit all of my needs and my parents’ schedule. The East Bay Field Hockey Association was exactly that; not only did it create a new love for this sport in my life, but it also shaped me into a new person. Upon joining, I had quickly learned that other players on my team had been playing hockey for a number of years; in order to catch up, I dedicated hours everyday for months of extra practice outside of club practices. Through playing field hockey, I’ve learned how to be a team player and learned how to communicate clearly with my peers, as it is an essential skill for a goalkeeper. Furthermore, I have learned how to take initiative when those around me need it most, how to persevere throughout my toughest moments, and how to focus on what is really important in my life. Finally, one of the critical elements I have taken away from playing field hockey is time management, between school work and my commitment to my team. Academically, I strive to maintain above a 3.8 GPA in high school, and attend a selective college that fits my goals in both academics and athletics. I would like to continue playing field hockey competitively at a collegiate level.
