Personal Statement

I started playing field hockey in 3rd grade,  but I didn't get very serious about it until 7th grade when I joined a club field hockey team with Fer De Lance (FDL). Field hockey quickly became my life. I used to perform in musical theater and it helped shape who I am today.  All of the things I learned while practicing and performing helped me to gain confidence and become comfortable in my own skin. I ended up having to give up being in shows because of the huge time commitment, and because I wanted to focus on field hockey. I still love theater and help with sets and help with things backstage, but again, field hockey has become my primary interest, commitment, and passion.

When I began 9th grade, I was so nervous about coming into a new school, but the Huron field hockey helped me with that. Huron field hockey gave me a group of people who I instantly connected with and cared about. I was the only freshman on varsity which was both an incredible honor and experience. Being able to train with a state champion team not only improved my stick and ball skills but also my over play. I love everything about field hockey. Playing for FDL also helped me find my love for team sports. I quickly realized how important it was for me to be apart of a team and make sure I exercise everyday. So I ended up playing ice hockey in winter season and lacrosse in spring. I had no idea how to play either sport. In fact, I didn't even know how to skate.

When my ice hockey season started, it was the first time I had ever stepped on the ice. I thought skating would be like running. I was so wrong, but I worked very hard and by the end of the season, I was starting games. I loved having a sport that was more aggressive, and some of that aggression has transferred over to my other sports which has helped my game by making me more assertive on the field and the side lines. Lacrosse was definitely easier for me to pick up, because I am already fast and I understand basic set field structures. I played defense and I was a starter on the varsity team. Playing defense was new for me, because I usually play midfield or forward in field hockey and hockey. It was good for me to step outside of my comfort zone and work on my defensive skills. Overall, all of these sports have improved my field hockey performance: ice hockey helped me to become more assertive and take more risks and lacrosse helped me learn more about playing defense and a running game.

My goal for my future is to play the sport that I love. which will always be field hockey. I always want to improve my game, so I am eager to listen and learn from the coaches and players around me. I want to develop as a person and a player, so I am extremely motivated to do whatever it takes to follow through on the advice that coaches and players give me. I love my team and this sport, so I am beyond willing to devote my time and energy to become the best player and person that I can be. I want to earn my spot on my team, I will work my hardest to deserve the play time that I get.
