Hello my name is Mayson Blondek,
I am a three season athlete and will be attending Proctor Academy in NH this year 2020 as a Junior. For the last two years of high school I was at Dover Sherborn High school in Dover, MA for the fall along while attending the five month program as a freshman and seven month program as a sophomore at Killington Mountain School for competitive ski racing. Freshman year was my first season actually playing organized field hockey. Our High School Varsity Field Hockey Coach was also the 8th grade gym teacher for Dover Sherborn Middle School and she asked what club field hockey team I was on while watching me play during 8th grade gym class. I informed her that I in fact had never really played before and she was a bit shocked, and then invited/encouraged me to tryout for the up coming freshman year. Admittedly I was excited to have a varsity high school coach notice me and ask me to try out for her team. Having been a competitive tennis player with good hand/eye coordination and being overall athletic helped me take to the sport very easily. I bought the gear, took a clinic and played summer league to get a better understanding of the game. As a freshman I played mostly on the junior varsity team as I learned the sport, and often was called up to practice with varsity and be available for varsity games. In my second season at Dover Sherborn I was one of only two sophomores that made the varsity team out of tryouts, and was a starter right from the beginning of the season. As a starter I continued to learn the game as my position as a mid-fielder, working hard and never taking playing time for granted. This lead to the great pleasure of being part of the Division II Massachusetts State Champion team, starting and playing 100% of the minutes in each playoff game through champs.
After completing state championships, I then moved back north to begin school at KMS and the competitive ski racing season. At the ski academy we spend five months doing intense training and racing, often interacting with Olympic level athletes and coaches. It also requires a lot time traveling to places like Canada and out west for winter and summer training. Life at the academy has taught me a lot about time management, managing school work and being an athlete, working remotely and persevering. Ironically when the COVID pandemic hit I was very well prepared to manage school from a remote perspective because of this experience, we literally continued as if on an extended travel schedule.
Additionally I am a competitive tennis player in the spring and summer when I am not skiing or playing field hockey. As a freshman returning from the ski academy back to Dover Sherborn HS I made the varsity tennis team, winning almost 100% of my matches as a doubles team and making it to state finals, where we lost as a team by 1 match but my doubles partner and I won our matches..
I have been awarded the Coaches Award eight times within three sports (field hockey, skiing and swimming). My work ethic is team driven with a personal spirited drive to compete and be challenged. My teammates refer to me as a leader for support, direction and spirit. Unlike my other sports, it is so fun and special to be part of a team that works with each other on and off the field. Being part of the Dover Sherborn team was one of the most supportive and encouraging group of female athletes and coaches I have ever worked with. Team work and confidence in each other was our best skill leading us to victory.
Although I discovered field hockey in middle school, it has led me to realize that I want to continue playing in college. The values and strategies I have learned from filed hockey are life long that I will use in many of my other sports, academics and future employment.
