Personal Statement

When I was ten years old, I became a goalie for a travel field hockey team. I can remember my first game like it was yesterday. The entire time I was plagued with worries… What if the ball hurt? What if I was not good enough to be the goalie? My heart started to beat faster, but my adrenaline kicked in, and I truly felt unstoppable. That same day, when I made my first block, I knew I had fallen in love with the incredible sport of field hockey.

As time passed and seasons came and went, I grew tremendously, as both a student and an athlete. I quickly learned new skills, both academically and athletically, proudly putting forth the effort needed to succeed in the classroom as well as on the field with my teammates. I thrive on feedback during games and practices, as I am always looking to grow as a goalie and improve against my opponents, in order to help lead my team to victories. Since I began this incredibly rewarding journey, I have grown to be much more introspective, learning that I perform better under pressure and am a natural leader. I always try to help guide and support my teammates by telling them where to shoot and how to get around me.

One obstacle that I have had to overcome was being a freshman and playing a sport at an understandably intense varsity level. I was challenged to play against seniors who were headed off soon to play in college, which was initially quite intimidating. Just as my worries subsided on that very first field when I was ten years old, however, nothing has stopped me from doing what I love to do.  My main academic goals for the next few years at Nottingham High School are to continue to get straight A's, while enjoying every minute of the learning process in each of my classes. While I know how important grades are, I have been raised to truly value the learning and knowledge gained above all else. For college, my goals are to continue to try my best every day, and with each unique opportunity that presents itself in the classrooms or on the field. Balancing academics and athletics is perhaps one of the most valuable lessons I have learned in my life and I am grateful for the sense of equanimity it has given me as I continue to grow and mature. I have mastered the art of carving out enough time during the school day, as well as after for my athletic commitments, to complete all of my homework, while still valuing my time with family, friends, and living a healthy lifestyle with regard to sleeping and relaxing as well. Staying focused, always keeping my academic and athletic goals in mind, and enjoying every minute of life on and off the field have helped me become the strong, vibrant, and humble leader that I am today.
