I have come extremely far within the last four years of my high school Field Hockey career.
My senior year I moved to defense to fill in for a teammate that had been injured. Coming off three years of offense, I wasn’t particularly thrilled but I decided stepping up to help my team was more important than my own opinions. My coach had tried to get me to try defense for years and I always said no out of fear for not knowing how.
Looking back, I wish I switched positions during my very first preseason. Turns out, I had a natural talent for the position and loved every second of it. I went from a mediocre insecure player to getting compliments from opposing coaches after games, racking up assists and an overtime goal to give my team its first win in two years. At the end of my season, I was given the Most Improved Player Award and was selected by coaches in the state of New Jersey to have the honor to play in the Jim Davis Senior Showcase game.
As a teammate, I am energetic, and love to encourage my peers to play to the best of their ability. However, I also take playing extremely seriously. Playing defense is drastically different than forward, however I wouldn’t change it for the world. I am able to see the game in a whole new light and learned the importance of being a leader and doing what’s best for the team despite your own wants. I enjoy being able to tell my forwards and midfielders what players are making a move, who is coming back to goal etc. Something I wasn’t able to do before.
I am extremely grateful the sport of Field Hockey is apart of my life and I would love nothing more to continue doing what I love.
