Personal Statement

My name is Carolina Riley and field hockey is definitely my favorite sport as well as my favorite hobby. Because of my love for the sport, I hope to play and compete on a team in college while I am furthering my education after high school. I believe academic and physical education are both very important so I would like to be able to have a lot of time for academics as well as time for practice or games out on the field. I am hard-working on both the field hockey field, and in the classroom, practicing new skills so I can continue to learn, grow, and improve.

On the field I am patient when I don’t have the ball and know that getting open for a good pass can really help out my teammates. I as well like to be fearless around the goal cage, by stepping in front of the goalie, and tipping in good shots from my fellow teammates. I also look for quality passing lanes, pass ahead of my teammates to open spaces and try to attack the circle as quickly as possible.  I believe failure is the key to success, that trying a new skill in a game might not work, but it will help make you a better player along with improving that skill. I also feel that having a positive attitude and giving good feedback to other players can help improve their game, as well as our team’s game in total as well as making new players to the team feel welcome.

In the classroom I really enjoy using my creativity to make interesting projects and videos to help myself and my classmates understand the information more clearly in a fun way. I also love being organized with taking notes, studying for tests, and writing essays so that new information that I want to learn can be easier to interpret because it’s neat and precise. In school I take two modern languages, Honors Spanish and Honors Mandarin, and I love challenging myself with learning both of them because I find language so interesting and an important skill to develop because it tests my ability to react quickly in a conversation, which I can use in a field hockey game to make quick decisions. I also enjoy playing music. I’ve been taking piano lessons for 8 years and I’ve part of a handbells ensemble at school for 6 years.
