Personal Statement

My collegiate goals and aspirations are fairly simple, play football and earn a quality education from a top university.

If you have me on your team, you will have a natural leader that is going to give you a 110% on the field and in the classroom. I am a type of player that will outwork anybody and everybody, but is also a team first guy. Because in order for me to get better, I need to help my teammates get better. I am also the type of player that will go the extra mile to get better. If you tell me to improve on a technique or a coverage, I will work day and night to improve whatever I needed to improve.

What makes me different from other recruits - is my will to grind it out through tough times. I am a person that will do whatever it takes to find a way to achieve excellence on the field and in the classroom; even if it means going through the toughest route. As an athlete, I always feel like I am the smartest person on the field. I was once told that the game is mostly mental and I took that to heart. I watch endless amount of film and always research who I am about to face. I would know the individual by first and last name and know how he runs his routes. Academically, I am unique because I know what I want to study for college already. Since my love for sports is so great and I love business and finance, I will combine those fields together and major in sports management. I will also earn a law degree so that I can become a GM for a sports team.

After closing out his regular season this past weekend, UConn Report caught up with him to discuss his recruitment and learn more about the player and the person. Kelly is currently being recruited by Boston College and Temple the hardest, and also attended a one-day camp at Ole Miss-where his father ran track- in the summer. He has also heard from multiple Ivy League schools, which is a good sign for any FBS program which may be considering him. A multi-sport athlete for the Bruins, also playing basketball and running track, Kelly has taken a liking to the defensive side of the ball on the gridiron. "I just love defense in general," he said. "Last year I played nickel, so I'm comfortable guarding tight ends, slot receivers, and really lining up anywhere in the secondary." Kelly prides himself on pursuing greatness as a shutdown corner, asserting a preference towards playing man-to-man coverage and studying receivers' tendencies to win one-on-one battles on the field. He's also keenly aware of what he needs to work on. "I felt like I didn't make a lot of tackles last year, so I made a conscious effort in the offseason with agility and tackling drills to be more aggressive and get better form," he explained. "You see D-1 corners, they come up and hit, and that's what I've been trying to do lately." Kelly has an interesting background having grown up in Texas, where he played youth football through middle school. His childhood friends have gone on to play at schools such as Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Baylor. "Texas' football mentality is just so different than any state in the country," he shared. "It's all about making plays, fighting for your brothers, and loving the fundamentals of football." It brought a unique perspective to his participation in this summer's inaugural New York vs. New England 7-on-7 All-Star Challenge. "I wasn't surprised because I made an effort to research the other players," he said. "I knew there was talent in this area, but I had never seen it all in one place. It was very fun and helps me realize what I need to work on." It may not be Texas, and never will be, but Kelly sees things moving in the right direction. "What I also learned is that people in this area are starting to figure it out as well." Though he does not currently hold any offers, the 2017 prospect is bound to have multiple options with so many different schools kicking the tires at the moment. Especially for prospects in this area, it is still quite early in the process. With a big life decision ahead of him, Kelly knows what he's looking for when evaluating the various opportunities. "First thing I look for is academics, what do they have that I want to do," he said. "As for the football team, I don't even look at the records or stuff like that. It's all about what the coaches are like and the atmosphere. The environment as a whole within the program is most important."

  • November 16, 2015 Cheshire Academy, Brunswick Display Top-Level Talent in Prep Showdown Aman Kidwai UConnReport.com Associate Editor Related Links: Connecticut Football Talent Improving Brandon Sebastian Discusses UConn offer CJ Holmes Gaining Steam in Recruitment Talk about it in The Fieldhouse It was a bitterly cold November evening on Saturday, November 14 at Simosa Field in Cheshire, Conn. as the Cheshire Academy Fighting Cats (5-3) hosted the Brunswick Bruins (7-2) for the final game of both team's regular seasons. In a tightly contested battle, Cheshire Academy prevailed 16-9. A short-handed Bruins team was without three of its best players on offense, including starting quarterback Nick Henkel, who has turned in a strong showing in his sophomore season. The loss was just the second of the year for Brunswick, which will continue its season with a bowl game against Milton Academy (MA). Their only other loss came against a very good Salisbury team on the road. In the game, both teams were hitting hard and, with the defenses playing well, the difference ended up being which team made more big plays. Brunswick had its fair share, but Cheshire Academy was the only team to score in the second half when Brandon Sebastian caught a pass from a scrambling CJ Lewis and scampered into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter. The game was tied 9-9 at the half. Lewis finished with 275 passing yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown pass came on a perfectly placed ball on a "go" route to receiver Joey Carter, who caught it cleanly and ran it in for a 65-yard touchdown. Sebastian and Lewis both hold offers from UConn and interest from many FBS schools. Sebastian also has offers from Temple and Rhode Island with Boston College showing a lot of interest lately. Brunswick's Cameron Kelly played a great game defensively at cornerback, but also helped his team get on the scoreboard with a remarkable 79-yard kickoff return which set up a touchdown. He would add an interception later in the game. Kelly currently has interest from Boston College, Temple, Yale and Princeton. Teammate Jourdon Delerme stood out as well at defensive back and wide receiver. Sebastian, who plays a hybrid running back/receiver role on offense, also had a nice day on the other side of the ball, grabbing an interception in the first quarter and making a long return to help Cheshire Academy flip the field. Teammate, C.J. Holmes, played strong defense as well at safety, making a nice over-the-shoulder catch for an interception and similarly returning it for a long gain. Holmes currently holds offers from Boston College, UConn, Temple and also, as of a few weeks ago, from Mississippi State. Defensive end/linebacker Brandon Ginnetti, a Class of 2015 Syracuse commit doing a post-graduate year at Cheshire Academy, had a great day as well, making tackles all over the field. Overall it was a great game, one which was indicative of the growing level of talent in Connecticut and its prep schools. Once college coaches start to realize that games up here are played with numerous Division 1-caliber athletes on both sides, including 4-star prospect Tarik Black, a wide receiver for Cheshire Academy with offers from every major FBS conference, they will have no choice but to start making a few more visits to the area.

  • Football Falls to Cheshire, Secures Bowl Birth 11/15/2015 In its final regular-season contest, Brunswick dropped a hard-fought 16-9 decision at Cheshire Academy on Saturday. Despite the setback, the Bruins (7-2) earned their third straight post-season bowl game, facing Milton Academy on Saturday, November 21 at Avon Old Farms. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. The Bruins defense, facing a talented offense averaging nearly 36 points a game, kept the Cats in check, holding Cheshire to nearly 20 below their season average. The Brunswick defense scored the first points of the game, sacking the Cheshire quarterback for a safety in the first quarter. On a first and 10 from the Cats’ own five-yard line, Senior defensive end McKinley Frantz flushed the Cheshire quarterback to his right, as classmate Pat Adamo barreled in from his defensive tackle position for the two-point sack at 7:46. Trailing 2-0, Cheshire got on the board later in the first quarter with a 68-yard touchdown pass, but the Cats missed the extra-point kick. After another Brunswick drive stalled out deep in Cheshire territory, the both teams exchanged a pair of punts in the second quarter, before the Cats made it a 9-2 lead on a 24-yard field goal with 4:46 left in the half. On the ensuing kick-off, junior returner Cam Kelly broke numerous tackles on a spectacular 79-yard return to the Cats’ eight-yard line. One play later, running back Jaydin Knight ’17 powered his way in for a touchdown. Placekicker Michael Gottlieb ’19 added the extra-point, tying the game at nine apiece, as the teams went into the halftime break. Midway through the third quarter, Cheshire took the lead on a broken play as their quarterback scrambled until finding an open receiver for a 20-yard touchdown. After the made extra-point kick, the hosts owned a 16-9 lead. More punts followed for both teams into the final minutes of the fourth quarter. On Cheshire’s final punt attempt deep in their own territory, the play broke down as an attempted pass was intercepted by Kelly on the Cats’ 30-yard line with 3:30 left to play. With great field position for a game-tying drive, the Bruins were stopped on a fourth-and-one play, turning the ball over with 1:45 left on the clock. The Brunswick defense forced another Cheshire punt, and the Bruins offense took over on their own 26-yard line with 16 seconds left in the game. Brunswick’s first play of the drive ended up being the last play of the game. With no time-outs, sophomore quarterback J.D. Sparks, stepping in for starter Nick Blum ’17 earlier in the fourth quarter, scrambled for a short gain. Brunswick could not line up in time for another play. The Bruins rushed for 116 yards on the day, paced by Jaydin Knight's 62 yards on the ground on 16 carries, including a touchdown. His twin brother Justin '17, added 32 rushing yards on a dozen attempts, as classmate Kyle Pryzpek chipped in with 20 yards on six carries. Defensively, junior linebacker John Fox added a baker's dozen in tackles, including two for lost yardage, while fellow linebacker Alex Russell made 10 stops, including a pair of sacks.

  • Brunswick football edged by Cheshire Academy By David Fierro Updated 9:41 pm, Saturday, November 14, 2015 Playing shorthanded, the Brunswick School football team pushed powerful Cheshire Academy to the limit on Saturday. The Bruins, who were without starting quarterback Nick Henkel, running back Jason Kennedy and wide receiver Sean Morris, were edged by host Cheshire Academy, 16-9 in a non-league game. Despite the loss, the Bruins will play Milton Academy at Avon Old Farms School at 1 pm in a New England championship bowl game. The top two teams in each division get a bowl game and the Bruins are among the top two squads in the Erickson League. With the loss, the Bruins are 7-2 for the season. “Defensively, we did a very good job of holding their offense down,” Bruins coach Jarrett Shine said. “They have an explosive offense, but they didn’t gain too many yards against us. The whole defense stepped up.” Linebacker Alex Russell and defensive back Cameron Kelly paced the Bruins’ defense, which has been stingy all season. Jaydin Knight scored on a 5-yard run for the Bruins, who entered halftime embroiled in a 9-9 tie. Brunswick got a safety in the first half by tackling Cheshire’s quarterback in the end zone. “We were really shorthanded,” Shine said. “But we still went out there and played a very strong, physical game.” Cameron Kelly Game Stats: 3 Receptions 55 yards 1 Kick Return 75 yards 1 interception [email protected]; 203-260-4033
