Hi Coaches,
Amongst several goals I have, one close to my heart is to have the opportunity to eventually play hockey at the College Level. I remember one of my prior coaches telling me that it's not a sprint, it's a really long marathon and that's how I like to see it.
This season I made the Brunswick Varsity team as a Freshman. I was also the only underclassman Defenseman. That was so exciting as I could stake with the team before the season started and get to know the players and coaches. However, things did not exactly go the way I expected it. On the very last game of my U15 split season with MF I broke my right arm and had to forget about hockey for more than 2 months. That period was difficult and really emotional for me. I think I learned a great deal about myself and the fact that there is just so much you can control in life and you simply have to adjust, then get up and come back stronger than ever.
Hockey remains my preferred sport and most of my schedule is built around it although school still ranks at the top of the chart as hockey is not forever. I demand and expect a lot from myself and I can't stand laziness, with a cast around my arm just made this even more difficult to process.
I enjoy having some free time but when I need to work (school or hockey) I really try to focus on the task that needs to be done. I think it's really important that I try to keep a good balance between school, sport and friends. I don't back out when someone is trying to push me above and beyond, I guess they see potential and that really drives me. I'll work on better myself by practicing on and off-ice, doing lots of dryland drills (I built my own soft ladder to work on my foot speed) and when I have time I like watching hockey games on TV.
While I get that I have to continue improving my game I also try to balance with other sports or activities. During this summer I will work as a golf caddie and I will also teach kids at a golf camp. I also compete in several golf tournaments as I am a member of the MET Junior PGA. I worked hard last summer and I ended the season with a handicap of 7, I can't wait for the coming season to start. At home my parents keep me busy with various tasks like mowing, painting and taking good care of my dog. I do volunteer work whenever I can. Doing all those activities allow me to disconnect sometimes from hockey but also makes me appreciate even more the fact that I can play hockey at a high level and share this passion with all my friends and teammates.
I really look forward to the next 3 years at Brunswick, it will be challenging, exciting and hopefully a great path for what comes after. I strongly believe the work ethic I go by will help me achieve my various goals in life and if I don't fulfill them all, at least I will be proud of myself as I will have tried as hard as I can.
