I always smile, no matter what. When my friends ask me why I always smile, sometimes I say I don’t know. The truth is, the reason I’m always smiling is because I have a happy life. I was never a kid with a hard childhood because I lived with both of my birth parents and I have never experienced what it is like to be poor. I grew up in a house with a sustainable income, on a military base where just about everything is safe.
For other students at my school, however, this is not the case. Some of them only live with one parent or with step-parents, they don’t have sustainable incomes, they have experienced having their house broken into, and most their parents do not have college degrees.
When I was in fifth grade we had Career Day at my school. One of the people that presented was my dad. I was surprised that anyone would ask a retired Marine (who uses a substantial amount of profanity) to come to my school. I found out that the Assistant Principal noticed that my dad had a good job and she invited him to school. When he came to the school and gave his presentation most of the kids understood how my dad’s background was similar to theirs, and how he obtained his wealth. I noticed however that not one other student had their parent present at Career Day.
